Webquests- providing an integrated project
Ref. Archer, J. & Saillard, L. (2003). An integrated curriculum through webquests. ICT in Education. 26 (2), pp. 3-6.
This article focuses on the use of a webquest in providing a multi subject integrated project. This was extremely interesting as Archer & Saillard (2003), comment that it is extremely hard for teachers, especially in the years 6-12 to plan together to form a multi subject integrated project. However, this still has relevance to the primary classroom as often RFF teachers take a subject such as computers, PDHPE and sometimes even Science and Technology. There are benefits for taking the time to plan an integrated project, as “producing units of work showing links between subjects is a powerful way to make class work interesting and relevant” (Archer & Saillard, 2003, p.3). Consequently, webquests can be particularly beneficial. As Archer and Saillard (2003) comment, “we have found webquests to be an ideal format and learning tool to deliver an integrated project” (p.3).
The article also goes through the process that staff at Northcote High School went through before, during and after implementing a webquest called ‘Amazon Rainforest’, which was an existing webquest which teachers adapted. What was interesting when reading their observations following the webquest was that “a sample student site on the web, with finished student products relating to the Amazon forest, had to be blocked” (Archer & Saillard, 2003, p.5). Therefore, I will most certainly take this into account when creating or implementing my own webquest.
